The City of Chicago celebrated the 103rd Anniversary of the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony with 48,375 twinkling lights and thousands of spectators in Millennium Park. The yearly ritual marks the official start of Christmas in Chicago as Skyscrapers change their lights to green and red.

Originally a staple of The Daley Center Plaza Downtown, this is the second year for the Christmas Tree’s new home at Washington & Michigan Avenue in Millennium Park.

Every year the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events receives hundreds of submissions of potential Christmas Tree candidates for the unveiling. Christmas 2016 belongs to the Scholla Family, who donated the tree with help from the Village of Wauconda. 165 Ton Crane Operator Scott Cahill had the honor of lifting the massive 69 foot tall Norway Spruce. Working hand in hand with Brightview Landscapes, the tree was hauled, hoisted, and harnessed for a city-wide debut.

The 103rd Lighting Ceremony was capped with a fireworks show and a visit from Santa Claus himself. Patrons then gathered around the Tree for photos before making their way to the famous Chicago Bean and ice rink, which is open to the public throughout the holiday season.

La Grange Crane is proud to play a part in the tradition of spreading Christmas cheer in the city we’ve served since 1964. The commemorative lighting of the tree offers a symbolic moment to step back, reflect, and give thanks to the hard working people of Chicago.

With that, a Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night.
